Gratitude

Christian Scientists have a great deal for which to be thankful; and as a rule they are not backward in expressing their gratitude. When the occasion permits, they gladly tell others of the healings they have received through the understanding of God and man which Christian Science has given them, in order to encourage them to study this Science for themselves, and thus benefit from its teachings. In public, too, at the Wednesday testimony meetings, they speak wisely of these healings, bringing out that they were demonstrations of the power of Truth; and they also becomingly express their gratitude.

The Christian Scientist is deeply grateful for the revelation of Truth which Christian Science has brought him, and for all that the revelation has meant for him. His attitude of thought is well expressed in the words of the Psalmist (Psalms 69:30), "I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving." How readily does gratitude that is sincere break forth into song! Thanksgiving and melody are closely related. The grateful heart finds ready expression through joyful lips.

The Christian Scientist is thankful for the healings he has received; healings, perhaps, of sin, disease, sorrow, or poverty. For in Christian Science all kinds of evil are destroyed in the same way, namely, by the understanding of God, divine Principle, and His law. Consider the healing of sin, which in many of its forms does grave injury to the health and happiness of mankind. How is sin healed? First, the allness of God must be understood and acknowledged. Secondly, the unreality of evil must be known—the utter unreality of evil. Next, the fact is recognized that sin never can give real pleasure. With thought thus enlightened, one who has been deceived by the suggestions of evil awakens as from a dream to find himself healed of the desire to sin. What cause for gratitude, for rejoicing!
