At a Wednesday evening meeting I once heard a testimony...
At a Wednesday evening meeting I once heard a testimony given by a man who had but little command of the English language. He said simply: "Christian Science she has been good to me. I'm much obliged!" And that is exactly how I feel; for in the fourteen years that I have been studying Science I have had many wonderful healings and experiences, and I feel that the least I can do in return for all that I have received is to express my unbounded gratitude to God, to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, who has given us our wonderful textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." This book has made it possible for us to know God aright, as Love, as All-in-all; it has also given us the understanding of the Christ-idea that heals all sin, sickness, lack, and the belief in death.
When Jesus appeared to his disciples after he had risen from the sepulcher, Thomas said, "Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe." Before I was healed in Christian Science, I, too, was a doubting Thomas; I doubted everything connected with this wonderful truth. It was my healing of the cigarette habit overnight that caused my awakening. I had reached the point where I had virtually become a dope fiend, as ordinary cigarettes had ceased to satisfy my cravings and I had recourse to the heaviest Oriental brands obtainable. I had tried the usual remedies known to materia medica, but to no avail, for I always returned to this habit after a brief respite.
At this time, the lady who is now my wife asked me to accompany her to a practitioner, not as a patient, but as her escort. After she had had her visit with this gentleman, who incidentally was formerly in the practice of medicine, the extreme desire to smoke assailed me. After resisting this craving as long as I could, I said, "Doctor, I have just got to smoke a cigarette," to which he responded, "Well, why don't you?" I needed no urging, but after I had puffed a few times I said, "Do you know, I'd do anything to get rid of this obnoxious habit?" He answered, "Are you really sincere in this? Do you really want to stop smoking?" I told him I had never been more sincere in my whole life. That was the last cigarette I ever smoked! I tried to light one the following morning, but became quite ill. That was the last time I attempted it, and I have been free from the habit ever since.
