Through reading the testimonies in the Christian Science...
Through reading the testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals I have many times found help and encouragement, so I am giving my experience in the hope that it may encourage others.
For some years a copy of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy had occupied space on our book shelves while I endeavored to find health through material means—allopathy, osteopathy, home remedies, and rest cure. During this time I opened the textbook of Christian Science once, but laid it away again while I continued the search for health.
When I had exhausted all available means and like the woman in the Bible "was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse," I was ready to receive the truth; and beginning with the Preface to Science and Health I read every spare minute. As I read I knew beyond a doubt that this was what I had been searching for; and as I continued to read the healing began to be manifested. Within a short time a brace which had been worn for three years was laid off and was never needed again. In the next few months colds and sore throat, which had been chronic since childhood, were overcome through my reading of the textbook.
At that time I knew nothing about the Christian Science movement except that there were churches in the larger towns. I had never heard of the other writings by Mrs. Eddy, or the Hymnal, the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, the periodicals, and did not know there were practitioners until one who had been healed through Christian Science came to visit in our home.
Just six months from the time I began to read I made my first visit to a practitioner. My gratitude for the loving, patient help and support given me is unbounded. One by one the discordant conditions were healed until a measure of health never before known was realized. Chronic biliousness disappeared, and glasses worn since I was a child for a condition known as myopia or nearsightedness were no longer needed. A short time before, a test had shown half-vision, but a later test proved the complete healing. These healings were accomplished without any specific work having been done, but came as the thought was cleared through my continued study and while I was having treatment for other ailments.
During the past sixteen years there have been many healings. Quinsy, influenza, bronchial pneumonia, bronchitis, burns, injuries, pain, and many unnamed physical discords have yielded to Christian Science. But more than all physical healing are the change of thought and new viewpoints gained, which make living worth while. One outstanding healing occurred recently. A condition which was very painful manifested itself in the sole of my foot, and made it almost imposible to walk. Through my study and the faithful work of the practitioner the diseased part worked to the outside and peeled off, leaving the foot well.
Membership in The Mother Church is a cause for gratitude. The Lesson-Sermons and the literature are a constant source of enlightenment and joy. Class instruction and the annual Association meetings have been of untold help. I am increasingly grateful to God for Jesus, who lived and taught the Christ, Truth, and for Mrs. Eddy, who was faithful to her mission of discovering and founding Christian Science.—(Miss) Ethel I. Reed, Galena, Illinois.
