From the time I was confirmed in a Protestant church and for many years afterward I never attended church services. I had a faint idea that there was a God who would forgive all my sins and transgressions some day in the future when I should have to leave this earthly existence.

In the year 1922 my health became very poor because of business worries. The illness started with pleurisy and other complications and I was confined in a large hospital in Boston. The doctors pronounced my case tuberculosis, which attacked my body in various parts. Three different times I had to go to the hospital for operations.

One day when it seemed all hope had left me, a brother came looking for me in the hospital. He said to me: "Here you are again, and there is no need for it. There is something called Christian Science. I do not know much concerning it, but I have a book that will tell you all about it." I begged him to take me to my house, which he did. The book which he had referred to and which he lent me was our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I did not understand much of it at the beginning, but as I read it, I caught a glimpse of Truth now and then. Again the statement was proved that "man's extremity is God's opportunity," for I was healed by reading the textbook. Since then Christian Science has sustained me and I have had no need of any other healing or physician.
