In the issue of your paper of June 17, in which was published a sermon entitled, "Man Must Conquer Fear," the minister classifies Christian Science as a cult, and objects to Christians going to Christian Science for healing. In order that your readers may not get a wrong impression of Christian Science, I wish to say that Christian Science is not a cult, defined in a dictionary as "a system of rites employed in worship."

Christian Science is a Christian religion, founded on the Bible, and especially on the words and works of Christ Jesus. It is an orderly and reasonable statement of the truth about God and man and all reality. Christian Science is the reinstatement of "primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, p. 17). In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 358): "Christian Science, understood, coincides with the Scriptures, and sustains logically and demonstratively every point it presents. Otherwise it would not be Science, and could not present its proofs."

It is true, as the minister says, that many are coming to Christian Science to be cured, and it is well to know that hundreds of the members of the Christian Science churches were former members of other churches. When all other methods of healing had failed, they turned to Christian Science and were healed. Christian Science is a religion of love and healing, and teaches its students how to overcome fear, sin, sickness, and all other discordant conditions by gaining a correct understanding of God as divine Love and of man as His image and likeness.
