"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is...
"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," read the opening words of the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When for the first time I opened the book and read those words I gave thanks, and declared, "My loving heavenly Father, I am leaning." The textbook had been lent to me because of my having said that I was continuing in prayer in order to get healing and was turning away from the world and the things of it. I had even stopped going to my church, as I always seemed worse after the excitement and exertion. I had expressed the thought to my minister that there should be healing in the churches. From childhood I had loved my heavenly Father, had given much thought to spiritual things, and had longed to know more about and to understand better the meaning of the Bible.
I was healed and uplifted spiritually through reading the textbook. An X ray had shown the aorta to be the cause of a severe heart condition, which had resulted in angina pectoris. In the ten years during which I suffered, I had six doctors and two specialists. I had gone to a well-known clinic, but had received no help, only kind advice and socalled stimulating medicines for the heart. I had tried electric treatments, chiropractic, all sorts of patent medicines, herb treatments, and so forth.
The textbook was lent me by a lady who had just bought it, and I, not knowing anyone who understood this teaching, read the wonderful message with an open mind. I gave thanks for Mrs. Eddy's ability to express such beautiful thoughts; and, although I do not claim to have understood much of its meaning, I accepted it all because of the beauty of the Preface and the chapter on Prayer, which I did understand. So every time the pain showed itself, I would declare my perfection as God's child, as Mrs. Eddy sets forth, with such conviction of the truth of her statement that I was raised up to health in a short time, although the doctors had thought the condition fatal, and had said that there was not an organ in the body functioning properly.
