The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Chicago, Illinois (joint lecture).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Eugene Alders, who said:—

In ever-increasing numbers men and women of the professional and business world are finding in Christian Science an invariable and unchanging Principle upon which they may successfully build.

Christian Science requires of its followers the highest morality and integrity; it promotes keenness and alertness; it establishes a right sense of values; it inspires to a continually greater love for God and man. No rule is more precious to the Christian Scientist than the Golden Rule, "All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." Along these lines Mrs. Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 135), "If you falter, or fail to fulfil this Golden Rule, though you should build to the heavens, you would build on sand."

Los Angeles, California (Thirtieth Church).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Mrs. Kathleen Taylor, who said:—

Several years ago I was healed of a cancerous condition of the mouth, through the loving work of a Christian Science practitioner. This healing did not take place, however, until I saw the necessity of replacing wrong traits of character with qualities of God.

Mrs. Eddy says (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 247): "Christ is meekness and Truth enthroned. Put on the robes of Christ, and you will be lifted up and will draw all men unto you. The little fishes in my fountain must have felt me when I stood silently beside it, for they came out in orderly line to the rim where I stood. Then I fed these sweet little thoughts that, not fearing me, sought their food of me." As we have less fear and more in God we shall abide in Love and reflect God's qualities.

Taunton, Massachusetts (First Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Louise Knight Wheatley Cook; introduced by Howard L. Hathaway, who said:—

Christian Scientists are a grateful people. Through the teachings of this religion they have obtained a better understanding of the nature of God and of their relationship to Him. In varying degree all have experienced healing of some kind and found a deep satisfaction in the knowledge of ever-present salvation.

For myself, I bear grateful testimony to the healing of a ruptured appendix when a young student of Science, and when medicine and surgery offered but slight hope for my life. Because Christian Science has done so much for its followers, it is not surprising that they welcome an opportunity to share it with all who hunger and thirst for Truth. In the words of the prophet Isaiah, they say, "Ho, every one that thirsteth come ye to the waters."

New Rochelle, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Dr. Hendrik J. de Lange; introduced by Mrs. Elizabeth Morse Ramseyer, who said:—

The First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," which is the foundation of Christian Science teaching and healing, clearly shows that there is but one God, one cause. It is the earnest desire of every student of Christian Science to gain a larger and clearer understanding of the one and only God, and to apply this understanding in his daily experience. As this is done he finds more harmony and peace reflected, not only in his own affairs, but also in the affairs of those with whom he comes in contact. Ever since girlhood, in school, in business, and in my home and church work, I have found Christian Science adequate to solve every problem. I have experienced physical healings myself and have witnessed the healings of many others.

A Christian Science lecture is a very happy and profitable event, for it provides an opportunity for us all to receive a greater unfoldment of God's omnipresence and omnipotence. Definite healings are often the result of the realization of this unfoldment.

West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (Society).

Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Mrs. Margaret E. Marsh, who said:—

The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, states in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 57): "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it." The giving of this lecture is our opportunity to share with others the truth which has brought so much happiness and so many blessings into our lives.

Some time after taking up the study of Christian Science I was troubled with a very painful condition of the eye, diagnosed by an eye specialist as ulcer of the eyeball. I applied to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, and when it became clear to me that the disease from which I was suffering was no part of the real man, made in God's image and likeness, my healing was complete.

Wichita, Kansas (First Church).

Lecturer: Peter B. Biggins; introduced by Mrs. Nellie Louise Brandt, who said:—

The Bible says, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Christian Science is this truth, as thousands all over the world have proved by gaining freedom from sin, sickness, sorrow, discouragement, and all discordant conditions.

Many years ago I first experienced this power when I was instantly healed of typhoid fever through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Since that time it has been my constant guide and comforter. This book not only healed me but unlocked the Scriptures and gave me an understanding of a God of love, who is infinitely good and ever present. This revelation not only made me well, but radiantly happy, a happiness founded on the rock of understanding, which can never be taken away. You too will find health and joy through the study of Christian Science.
