I should like to pay a small part of my debt of gratitude...

I should like to pay a small part of my debt of gratitude to Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder by adding my testimony to those of thousands who have benefited from its teachings.

I began the study of this Science when I was a young girl just entering college, and at once began applying my knowledge of it with most satisfying results. During my first Christmas vacation, while at the home of a relative two thousand miles from home, I was taken suddenly ill with a bilious attack, to which I had often been subject in the past. My aunt kindly offered to call a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly assured me that there was nothing to fear, and that I might go down and join the family at dinner if I wished to. This I did a few minutes later, to the astonishment of the family, and I have never had a return of this trouble in the twenty years which have followed. I finished the school year without so much as a cold, though the fear of weak throat, coughs, and colds had been instilled in me since childhood. When the influenza epidemic was claiming its victims all over the country, several years later, I was able to help care for a neighbor who was in bed with this sickness, and some days later to overcome within a few hours the same trouble for myself.

Now, as the mother of two small boys, I continue to rejoice that God's law is ever present and available, and never fails us. Many so-called children's diseases have been met, sometimes in a few hours, sometimes in a few days, but always with an accompanying sense of cheerfulness and peace and the certainty that "omnipotent Truth certainly does destroy error" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 353). At one time, while I was alone in the house with the children, the elder boy, then four years old, ran a sewing machine needle through his finger. When I found him he had jerked the finger out of the machine, breaking off the needle, which had run through the finger and projected on each side. It was in so tight that I had to use my teeth to pull it out, trying at the same time to calm the screaming child and silence my own fearful thoughts. I sat down with him in my lap and read to him from Science and Health, singing and declaring the truth until he stopped crying and jumped off my lap to play. The next day there was absolutely no soreness, and in a very few days not a sign remained where the needle had entered.
