When I was a child a licensed eye specialist and later...
When I was a child a licensed eye specialist and later a licensed optometrist informed me that I had double astigmatism, which would necessitate my using glasses when reading, writing, and theater going, and that they would in time need to be worn almost constantly. This suggestion was fulfilled, and I got some glasses, using them very often, as I needed to relieve head pressure and strain.
In my desire to help others in Christian Science, I realized that I ought to overcome this false sense for myself, as perhaps someone might come to me who wished to be healed of defective eyesight.
Then one night I attended a lecture on Christian Science, after my eyes had given me much trouble the entire day. During this lecture my eyes felt refreshed, cool, clear, strong, wide-opened. I dropped the glasses and left them dangling on the cord and looked about me. Every feature of each face was clearly seen, whereas before faces in the audience were always blurred. I discerned the features of an acquaintance in the very last row, although one of the mesmeric suggestions had been near-sightedness. But the demonstration was not finished, and for two weeks I pondered Mrs. Eddy's words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 201), "The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love." The struggle was a fierce one, but I proved Truth to be the victor, and from that time to this, over three years, I have never worn the glasses. The Bible says, "Freely ye have received, freely give;" and I send this grateful message that it may encourage others to carry on.
