I Thank Thee, Tender Shepherd

I thank Thee day by day, O Lord, my God!
For Thou hast led me all the darkened way
And o'er the jagged rocks, to heights of joy
Of which I had not dreamed in valley paths.
But now with mists dispersed I clearly view
The road that I have climbed, and gladly know
Thy love that girded me through all the years
When rebel heart cried out with greedy will
To gain false peace, mistaken happiness,
And all the boastings of material sense
Which wily beckoned with allurements vain.

I thank Thee, Love divine, Thou didst deny
Those selfish prayers wherein I asked amiss;
Nor knew I what the patient future held
To bless and save me—e'en Thy loving scourge
Which chastened human longings, foolish hopes
Until I humbled was, and called to Thee
For help and strength courageously to tread
The way where Thou wouldst guide me into light.

With gladness ringing through my heart today,
And grateful memory of Thy tender grace,
My head is bowed before Thee; and again
I thank Thee, Lord, for those unanswered prayers!
