Summer Services

Christian Scientists who frequent Yosemite Valley, California, during the summer months of June, July, and August will be glad to know that First Church of Christ, Scientist, Fresno, will this year sponsor Christian Science services there as in past summers. The services will be held in the Bowl at 3 p.m., each Sunday, except July 19, when, instead, a free lecture on Christian Science will be given in the Bowl by Peter V. Ross, of San Francisco, a member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts. First Church in Fresno is the nearest Christian Science church to the Yosemite, and so finds it more convenient than more distant churches to conduct the services, but other churches and societies of the state add their practical support. The public is cordially invited.

Services are held in other parks and resorts during the vacation seasons, sometimes by our near-by churches, and at other times by individual Christian Scientists in the vicinity. In Palm Springs, a desert resort in California, is a unique arrangement. A plot of land was given by a woman visitor, and on it was built a shelter known as a "ramada." Having a wooden floor, it is completed by upright poles and open rustic structure supporting a roof heavily thatched with palm leaves. About two dozen collapsible chairs are available, and a specially built Readers' desk within which are safely stored the Hymnals, collection basket, and the like. Only the organ—a small portable one—is brought for the service each Sunday. A stone walk is attractively laid from the roadside through the desert sand to the ramada's entrance, and all who wish to tread this pathway are welcome to do so and are invited, should they come on Sunday mornings when services are held, to join in the worship and hymn singing.
