About forty years ago, when a very small boy, I overheard what to me was a remarkable conversation, which took place between my mother and her aunt, who was visiting at our home in Nova Scotia. The aunt, whose home was in Boston, spoke of the Christian Science Sunday School as "a most wonderful benefit to children." This was my first knowledge of Christian Science.
Some years later, shortly after making our home in Alberta, when medical skill, which included two surgical operations, had failed to heal our daughter, an appointment was made for me to visit a Christian Science practitioner. I had been told by the doctor that he would not be responsible for the results of another operation, for the reason that the child had almost passed on at the time of the last one, although he contended that a further operation was necessary. That evening I kept the appointment with the practitioner, and I shall long remember what can best be expressed in the words of Paul, "Our conversation [was] in heaven." I felt sure that I had met somebody who had a demonstrable understanding of God. Our daughter was healed by that one absent treatment, and she has never been ill since. As an understanding of Christian Science began to unfold in my consciousness, the real meaning of the experience I have herein related began to dawn. Our youngest son was instantaneously healed of a physical infirmity with which he had suffered from birth; thus a surgical operation that had been planned for him was never needed.
I have had several physical healings of both acute and chronic diseases, throughout the past fourteen years, by the application of the truth as taught in Christian Science. However, I had many lessons to learn, until finally Christian Science became the greatest thing in my life. Some of my healings took many years of sincere, faithful effort, but not without progress heavenward, of which I have proof. "The purification of sense and self is a proof of progress" (Science and Health, p. 324).
