My attention has been drawn to a letter in your issue...
Newcastle Advertiser
My attention has been drawn to a letter in your issue of March 17, criticizing the teachings of Christian Science and commenting adversely on an authorized Christian Science lecture, of which an abbreviated report was recently published in your newspaper. I shall be much obliged, therefore, if you will kindly find space to publish this reply for the benefit of "Seeker after Truth," and for the purpose of clarifying for your readers any misunderstanding on the subject arising out of that letter.
The Christian Science religion is founded on the Bible because it acknowledges and adores one infinite God, who is supreme in heaven and on earth. It acknowledges and teaches that "God created man in his own image," and that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Thus, it unites with the spiritual record of creation, as contained in the first chapter of Genesis, and with the inspired Word throughout the Bible.
The Christian Science religion is also in accord with the teachings and the great healing mission of Christ Jesus, who taught that God is "our Father," and that therefore man's real selfhood is of the nature of God. Jesus understood and taught man's unity with God. He said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect"—because he understood that man is, and always has been, spiritual, immortal, perfect, and unfallen. This truth enabled the Nazarene to banish sickness, sin, and death as not of God, and he commanded his followers to do likewise. Therefore, in healing the sick and the sinning, Christian Science not only is obeying the commands of our Master, but is giving again a correct understanding of God and man, and thus giving the world a practical faith in God's goodness.
