Brotherhood
The life of the Christian Scientist should be a convincingly practical demonstration of two basis facts of being, namely, the all-inclusive fatherhood and motherhood of God and the universal brotherhood of man. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 332): "Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation. As the apostle expressed it in words which he quoted with approbation from a classic poet: 'For we are also His offspring.'"
It is probably safe to say that most of us take up the study of Christian Science because we are Truth-seekers, and because we have seen in its healing rays our first gleam of Truth, God. Very soon, however, the necessity arises for putting into practice our new understanding, for use it we must, if we are to grow. In meeting this demand we must follow the simple, straightforward course pictured for us by our Leader. By submitting all our thoughts, habits, and desires to the test of Truth, by discarding the conventional worldly mask with which is covered up our real individuality, we shall gain for ourselves the abiding satisfaction of a closer approach to Truth, and shall exemplify to our brother our true concept of man as reflecting Truth.
The student of Christian Science who pursues this course consistently will find that he is expressing in his daily contacts a new freedom and humanity. To realize clearly and demonstrably that God, divine Truth, is indeed the Father of all is to understand the heart of true democracy. This realization, which inevitably comes to those who strive to live close to Truth, can and will transform all human relationships. Warmed by its inspiration, the student's whole attitude becomes freer and friendlier. He understands practically, instead of believing theoretically, the great fact that, because all God's children are equally precious in the Father's eyes, so must they be to him. And with this understanding he becomes openhearted and open-minded, a true brother to all mankind.
