Signs of the Times

[Editorial in the Ashington Collieries Magazine, England]

Some years ago a prominent North of England coal owner made this illuminating remark: "The company of the future," he said, "which has no Soul will not survive." A business built up on integrity of purpose and upright dealings will stand up against any adverse conditions, for the simple reason that it is founded upon a Rock. It does not exist to benefit a few but to afford occupation and the means of happiness to many. Because of the right ideas with which it was started and continued those engaged in its work of progress will be continually alert to seize each opportunity for progress....

A large buyer recently said that if he were offered a deal that was likely to prove pecuniarily profitable to his firm but was lacking in ... honesty, he would turn it down because he knew that his company would be bound to lose by it in the long run. A manager of a large undertaking has stated that he would not dream of starting the day's business without first applying for guidance to the Scriptures. We do not refer to any sect or creed—the truths contained in the Scriptures do not specifically recognize any such—but we are very certain that in the measure in which any individual will avail himself of the chart and compasses which lie hidden in the books of the Bible, he will discover that he is able to steer a safe course over the present troubled waters of trade—particularly if he realizes that after all there is in point of fact only one business—the "Father's business."
