I am very happy to express my gratitude for what Christian Science...
I am very happy to express my gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me. Before I became interested in this Science I seemed to have lost faith in everything. The question that often came to my thought was, Why am I living? It seemed that I was living in a mad whirl, working, struggling, and suffering—and what was the use of it all? Physically I was suffering from what the doctors called double curvature of the spine, with many accompanying nervous disorders. I went from one doctor to another, finding only temporary relief. I finally gave up, with the realization that the doctors could not help me. For about six months I went without any medical aid, then Christian Science was introduced to me.
The first literature that I read was a Sentinel which I received at a lecture. After reading it I went to the library and borrowed a copy of Science and Health. After reading the first page I removed my glasses, which I had used many years for reading and studying. I thought that if, as our Leader says there, "the prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love," then I could not have absolute faith in God and keep those glasses on. I have never put them on since.
After that I became so interested in the thoughts expressed in the book that I forgot all about my physical ailments. I tried my best to put what I was learning into practice. It seemed as I read that this was just what I had always been looking for, but when at my work or in association with others I would catch myself almost puzzling about how I could apply what I had been learning. I was so interested in this process that one day, shortly after I had finished my first reading of Science and Health, I was startled to discover, as I sat down in the street car, that, instead of easing back in my seat in order not to hurt my back I felt as if I had a rod down my back and realized immediately that I had been healed. This healing took place about three years ago, and I have never had any return of the disorder.
