My first healing in Christian Science was of total deafness

My first healing in Christian Science was of total deafness. I had suffered from babyhood with terrible earache. My people moved to a village where, they had been informed, there was a doctor who had been very successful in overcoming ear troubles. I doctored for two years "and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse," for I became totally deaf. One eardrum, the doctor said, was entirely destroyed. A very serious skin disease had developed on my face. Our next-door neighbor, who was one of a very few Christian Scientists in this village, said that I could be healed of both these troubles through Christian Science. My people consented, as there was no hope left in material remedies. I had treatment for several weeks, seemingly with no result. Then, one day, upon visiting the practitioner, I was instantly healed of all pain, and my hearing returned in a short time, and was pronounced perfect by the school authorities. The skin disease also disappeared. Since then, when in trouble, I have always turned to the truth about God and His idea, as taught in Christian Science, and have always received healing.

I have been healed of infantile paralysis, missing less than a week from school. I have been taken home with sprained ankles or knees and have been able to walk a mile to school the next day. The last of these experiences of sprained joints I should like to relate somewhat in detail. After I had graduated from school, I was visiting a friend in a city. I fell the length of a steep flight of stairs with my leg underneath me. When I landed at the foot, I discovered that my kneecap was on the side of my leg, so I quickly pulled it back into position. A practitioner was asked for help, and on Wednesday evening, with the aid of a friend, I walked to and from church—a distance of three long city blocks. Thursday I went home alone, having to change cars twice and walk a good half mile uphill. My ankle was swollen twice its size and there was a very sharp pain at the knee; the whole length of my leg was black and blue. The pain at the knee remained for several weeks, and at the request of my father I went to an osteopath for an examination. He said that I had caught a nerve when I pulled my kneecap back and that I had torn the ligaments from the bone the whole length of my leg. I was not to walk on uneven surfaces, and so forth. I had been going and continued to go where duty called me, and the pain soon left and everything became normal.

The summer before my senior year in school I accepted a friend's offer of a position in the household. Her husband was an ear, throat, and nose specialist. I had been in the home only a few days when I was informed that I must be operated on for adenoids. This was really my first testing time, for I had to make the decision as to whom I would serve. I decided not to be operated on, but wrote for Christian Science help. That was the last I heard about it, and now I have no sign of adenoids. I have also been healed of influenza, mastoiditis, arthritis, and sick headaches, which were supposed to be hereditary, also an infection of the foot, and many other ailments.
