Mary Baker Eddy begins her Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
Mary Baker Eddy begins her Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as follows: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Since I first read these words about nine years ago, the truth of this statement has been proved many times in my own experience.
When I first heard of Christian Science I had for a long time been a hopeless victim of many depraved and vicious appetites. Excessive self-indulgence brought inevitable penalties, and I discovered that sin had its ugly and painful aspect. Although I became convinced that the penalties of sin exceeded its pleasures, I was unable to free myself from the dominion of these habits until I found the way in Christian Science. After one treatment by a practitioner I was freed from most of these enslaving habits and was enabled to commence the task of learning to think and practice Christian Science.
Early in my studies I found that Mrs. Eddy warns her readers against the habit of smoking. In my experience the healing of this false desire was a very slow one, and at times I almost lost hope that I should win my freedom from this slavery. I received help from various Christian Science practitioners in different parts of the world, but this craving to smoke continued unabated. Eventually this habit made me very unhappy, as it seemed to be blocking my progress in Christian Science. Some time ago the thought came to me with great force that I both could and should take my stand against this false appetite at once. With the assistance of a practitioner in Paris, in a very short time and in a fairly easy manner, I learned that this erroneous belief could not exist in the presence of omnipotent Truth, and I was healed of the habit. This awakening has helped me more than I can realize at present, and I am very grateful for the patient and loving work of the various practitioners who contributed to the solution of the problem.
