In September, 1923, I was passing through a very distressing experience regarding a member of my family. At that time one of my sisters, who is a Christian Scientist, was staying with us, and it was her calm, peaceful state of thought and purpose, at a time when all was seeming chaos, that led me to realize that she had found something in her religion which I had not found in mine. Very shortly after this I was impelled to borrow the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As I read the chapter on Prayer for the first time, my thought became so illumined that I knew I had found the truth which was going to eliminate all my sickness and distress. My consciousness became flooded with a great sense of peace and joy, never before experienced. I accepted this truth whole-heartedly. It was revealing to me many of the Bible truths which before had been obscure, and in a very short time I found I was healed of pernicious anæmia, from which I had suffered for many years, and which had caused both my family and me much distress, several doctors having pronounced this condition incurable. In this healing I realized the necessity of obeying Christ Jesus' injunction, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." While I was seeking this kingdom of heaven, harmony, I was healed through reading the textbook. This healing has remained permanent, and I am now in good health, full of joyous activity.
In December, 1927, I broke a wrist, but experienced a very beautiful healing. The loving help of a practitioner was given with this comforting message from Psalms: "He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken." When my husband saw the condition he wanted me to go to a doctor to have the wrist set; but I had learned sufficient of the healing truth to be able to trust God, and my desire was to demonstrate the truth regarding mental surgery stated in Science and Health (p. 402), "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon," and also the Bible promise in Ezekiel that God "will bind up that which was broken." The hand and arm were very much bruised and swollen, but the answer came from Science and Health (p. 385): "If you sprain the muscles or wound the flesh, your remedy is at hand. Mind decides whether or not the flesh shall be discolored, painful, swollen, and inflamed." The happy result was that the healing was manifested in a very short time without any material aid whatever. Through the whole experience I was able to carry on my household duties.
The physical healing was very beautiful, but the spiritual understanding gained during this experience was much more so. For this I am increasingly grateful. Twice I have had quick healings of a sprained ankle through my own understanding of the healing truth.
