Signs of the Times

[Rev. James B. Mulder, as quoted in the Daily Home News, New Brunswick, New Jersey]

When Peter spoke of Jesus in relationship to death he said simply, "It was not possible that he should be holden of it." The essence of the resurrection fact is the supremacy of the spiritual over the material. The Easter message is this: That no incident or accident which may affect my temporal relationships has any power over me in my spiritual relationships. No change, no loss, no disappointment, shock, or tragedy, which touches the externals of my existence can touch my life itself. My real Life is the Life of the Spirit. No values have lasting significance save those related to that Life.

Today, Easter, we are thinking about the resurrection, life eternal, immortality; but is it not true that altogether too many are thinking about a future event rather than a present reality? The Christian world has been slow to receive the conviction that eternal life is not primarily a hope to be cherished for the future, but an acquisition to be attained in this present life; that the time to enter eternity is now. "Lay hold on eternal life," is Paul's advice.
