It is now nearly seventeen years since I first heard of Christian Science, through people who did not appreciate it themselves. They lent me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I began to read at once. I found it a beautiful book, explaining the Bible, which I had always loved and read. About three months after this I took up the study of Christian Science in earnest, and have been deeply grateful ever since. During the first month or two I found myself entirely free from sick headaches from which I had suffered for a long time. I was also healed of malarial fever. This healing has been permanent.

Another more recent healing was that of badly torn ligaments of a foot. While I was running down the stairs one night, the heel of one of my shoes caught on the last step. I fell, but got up at once and walked back upstairs. There was no pain, but the foot felt somewhat numb. I did my best to know the truth. Next morning I found it impossible even to rest my foot on the floor without intense pain. The friends with whom I was staying were very much alarmed, and wanted me to see their doctor, as they thought a bone might be broken; but this I refused to do. There were no other Christian Scientists near, and no practitioner on the island. After two or three days a telegram was sent to a student asking her assistance. The healing was rather slow, as there was resentment in my thought to be overcome because of the attitude of my friends towards my refusal to have medical treatment. After two weeks I told them that since it was their desire I would let the doctor see me, but would allow nothing to be done. He said that I must have had a terrible wrench, as the ligaments had been badly torn, but that they were almost healed, and I had done splendidly for myself; he could not have done any better. He did not know I was a Christian Scientist. His advice was to massage the foot. I would not do this, but continued to know the truth, and the healing was completed. All through those weeks I experienced not the slightest pain, although none of those around believed that this could be possible. I was grateful for this demonstration, as it proved to others who knew nothing of Christian Science that the power of divine Love does heal.

I am happy to have gained some understanding of the truth which, as I study day by day, teaches me more about God, solves every problem, eradicates false beliefs, is my only protection, and enables me to be of greater service to others. I have had wonderful proof of God's loving care under all circumstances, "through radical reliance on Truth" (Science and Health, p. 167).
