In August, 1917, Christian Science was presented to me
In August, 1917, Christian Science was presented to me. At this time I was in a nervous, run-down condition, had lumbago, sciatica, constipation, from which I had suffered all my life, other painful physical conditions which would recur every few months, and frequent sick headaches which I had had for a period of over twenty years. I had worn a truss night and day for seven years, and had tried every means or remedy I could think of, but physicians had failed to help me.
I loved to read the Bible and felt that there must be a God, but I had become discouraged. When our son was called among the first to serve in the world war it seemed more than I could bear. Then my sister brought me the Christian Science textbook, which she had borrowed from our local Reading Room, and said, "Read this book for a few days, it may help you." I accepted it, read it constantly the few days I had it, and then borrowed one for myself. Although I did not understand much of what I read, I felt there was something wonderful therein, and I could not let the book alone. During the two weeks before my son was to report at camp I was healed of all fear and apprehension on his account, for I was convinced that God, of whom this wonderful book told, could take care of him wherever he would be called upon to go. I never doubted this during the twenty-two months he served.
We found we must have a textbook of our own, and although at that time we had not much money, we bought one. We also bought all our Leader's Writings as soon as possible, for we felt we could not afford to be without them. Our financial condition soon improved, and as we studied we began to receive physical healing. We never thought about our ailments; but I soon laid off the truss and have never worn it since, although I have been very active in housework and gardening. The lumbago and sciatica also were healed; and in about four months I was healed quickly of a severe sick headache. These healings took place in 1917 and they have all been permanent. I had no treatment. Later I had a severe pain in my shoulder and sought help from a practitioner. During the conversation with her some very wrong thinking about a member of my family was uncovered. This was quickly corrected; and the pain left during the visit and has never returned. I threw away all the medicine we had in the house. Constipation was also healed soon afterward.
