Individuality

[Written Especially for Young People]

In schoolroom associations there comes to the pupil a sense of his individual place and work. On entering any school for the first time he may feel that he is a stranger there, and alone. He will have impressions of the new teacher and of those about him. He perhaps will wonder what they are thinking about him—what impressions they are forming as to his personal appearance and his character.

The student who has been instructed in the Christian Science Sunday School has the true basis from which to view this new situation rightly. In this regard a familiar passage on page 285 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is helpful: "Man's individuality is not material." This turns thought toward spiritual individuality. With this as a guide the student will regard each new face with right thoughts, for he will be looking deeper than material impressions, and will learn to judge character aright.

It is not sufficient for the young student of Christian Science to rest on surmises regarding human character, for "personality is not the individuality of man" (Science and Health, p. 491). Attractive people may be expressing only an elaborated sense of personality, and the student soon learns from experience that merely attractive personality does not wear well as a basis for friendship.
