I have been asked to tell you why I am a Christian Scientist...

[Extracts from an address by Frank K. Poe, Committee on Publication for the State of Maryland, before the Baltimore Young Friends]

I have been asked to tell you why I am a Christian Scientist. My attention was first called to Christian Science by the healing of a friend of difficulty with his eyesight. This healing made a great impression on me and caused me to take stock of my thinking, especially as it related itself to religious or spiritual matters. There was a great awakening. I realized that down through the ages the power and availability of God's law had been made manifest in the healing of discordant conditions of almost every nature. Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Elisha, and Elijah had all demonstrated their faith in God's spiritual law in many striking and seeming miraculous ways. Then I began to ponder the words and works of the Founder of Christianity, Christ Jesus, whose follower I claimed to be. An understanding of this same spiritual law was conspicuous in his every word and deed. In the accomplishment of many marvelous works, Paul, as well as the disciples, demonstrated their understanding of this law.

Then I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. With continued study of this book there gradually developed an understanding of God and of man, and of their inseparable relationship, which was indeed a revelation to me. I saw that it is not God's will, much less His law, that men should suffer. I gained an understanding of God's creation. I saw that His creation is wholly good, like its creator. Nothing emanates from God, Love, Mind, except that which is good and loving and intelligent.
