The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Fort Dodge, Iowa (First Church).

Lecturer: Bicknell Young; introduced by Clifford C. Hall, who said:—

Christian Scientists are daily striving for a better understanding of God and of the words and works of Christ Jesus. Had the world understood the true meaning of that remarkable statement made by him when he said, "Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world," mankind would have saved itself centuries of servitude to an unreal master.

To the enlightened sense of Christ Jesus the world was but a false belief in a selfhood apart from God, and his clear understanding of the presence and power of God enabled him to say to the sick and sinning, "Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. He might have said, "I have overcome that which seemed real to your frightened, mistaken sense."

Christian Science is proving today that the world, or material existence, can be improved upon, and these proofs are bringing freedom and cheer to the sick and sorrowing, the discouraged and fearful.

Birmingham, Warwickshire, England (Third Church).

Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Herbert Muir, who said: —

It was while I was reading for the first time "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy that the Christ, Truth, came into my consciousness and instantaneously healed me of all desire for alcohol. So impressed and grateful was I for this experience that I was impelled to study more closely this wonderful truth which Jesus promised would make men free. It was not long before other healings followed, notably one of acute rheumatism, and another of pleurisy. Also in my business affairs, Christian Science has lifted me out of a very unhappy position, into one of complete harmony. Here then are just one or two experiences, sufficiently varied in character to prove conclusively our Leader's statement, found on page 494 of our textbook, where she has written, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."

Orange, New Jersey (First Church).

Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by William K. Kitchen, who said: —

That Christian Science heals all manner of physical illness and reforms the sinner according to the teachings of Christ Jesus is an incontrovertible fact, to which thousands of authenticated cases of healing in this and foreign countries bear witness.

In my family I have seen several cases of healing through the application of Christian Science. A member of my family was healed of defective eyesight at the age of fifty through the study of Science and Health. Eyeglasses which had been worn for many years were permanently discarded, also a severe case of chronic bowel trouble was healed, and a fibroid tumor was dissolved without resorting to material remedies.

Nairobi, British East Africa (Society).

Lecturer: Ralph B. Scholfield; introduced by Miss Marie A. Hamilton, who said: —

Fifteen years ago, as the result of a rheumatic chill, I had a crippled left arm and hand. As this incapacitated me in my work, my employer said that I must see a doctor about it, but I was promoted to ask if I might see a Christian Scientist instead. I went to one who lived ten miles away, and when I returned to my work, my arm and hand were perfectly normal. No one was more surprised than I. Since that time, I have seen more of the healing work of this great religion. I have seen unhappiness healed. I have seen lack, whether it was lack of right activity, lack of supply, or lack of harmony, healed. I have seen sickness, including cases of appendicitis and broken bones, healed, with no other help than Christian Science treatment. I have seen drunkenness healed.

All healing in Christian Science takes place through a better and clearer understanding of the omnipotence of God.

Toledo, Ohio (Second Church).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Mrs. Elizabeth M. Boyle, who said:—

All men want good. They are searching for it in devious ways today—but in each case the good they are searching for is their present highest concept of good. They do not want that good to be only for a moment—here today and gone tomorrow—they want it to be lasting or permanent good. Then, in the last analysis, that for which the hearts of men are really reaching out is eternal good, and we know that eternal good is God.

Jesus told us very plainly where to find the kingdom of God, or good, when he said, "Behold, the kingdom of God is within you."

More than twenty years ago I too was searching for good in the form of health, and, through the understanding of God, or good, as revealed in Christian Science, I found not only more perfect health than I had ever known before, but also happiness and peace. "God is no respecter of persons." The good He gives to all who turn to Him with an earnest desire to know Him.

Winlock, Washington (Society).

Lecturer: Dr. John M. Tutt; introduced by Miss Anna Sorenson, who said:—

Before taking up the study of Christian Science I was a member of an orthodox church, and I often wondered why the command of the Bible, to heal the sick as well as the sinning, was left out of the practice of our religion. I did not receive a satisfying answer until the healings of others, as well as my own, convinced me, beyond a doubt, that the truth taught in the Bible and demonstrated in Christian Science does heal the sick and cast out errors.

One of my first healings was of appendicitis, for which I had been advised to have an operation. However, my earnest desire to rely on God and give Christian Science a fair trial resulted in a quick and complete healing. For this and many other proofs of God's power to heal, I am very grateful.

Tulsa, Oklahoma (First Church).

Lecturer: Paul A. Harsch; introduced by Mrs. Frederica L. Brooks, who said: —

Because I was very eager to learn more about Christian Science I attended my first lecture more than twenty years ago. A statement made that night, to the effect that man is wholly spiritual and not subject to sin, disease, and death, changed my whole line of thinking from a material to a spiritual basis.

Up to this time I had not only been taught but believed that God sent both good and evil, and that evil, such as sin, disease, and death, was sent for a good purpose. It is with a psalm of gratitude that I tell of this experience; for the spiritual illumination that came as a result of that lecture has given me a better understanding of God's law of unfolding good.
