Words can never express the gratitude of one who has...
Words can never express the gratitude of one who has experienced the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science. This healing truth came to me in answer to prayer, when, like the prodigal son, weary with materiality and all its suffering, I reached out to God and found the loving welcome of the Father.
When Christian Science came to me in 1916 I had been more or less of an invalid for about five years, suffering from an organic disease. During this time I had been an inmate of four hospitals, undergoing operations, the last one being for peritonitis with complications. Although my life was despaired of, after some weeks I recovered enough to be sent away to the sea; but I was again taken ill, and within three days found myself once more in a hospital, where I remained for six months. Here the surgeons told my relatives that the diseased organs were in too bad a condition for them to operate, and that they could do no more for me, but that I might be helped somewhat if I went to an open-air sanatorium for some months. It was while I was waiting for admission to the sanatorium that a friend wrote asking me to try Christian Science. I knew nothing of this teaching, but after suffering so much I was willing to try anything; it was not until I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that I realized it had come to me in answer to prayer.
The healing was not a quick one, although I was greatly encouraged to press on, as many ills from which I was suffering just dropped away without a conscious effort at the time. Some of the healings I experienced in those early days were of boils, sties on the eyes, an unpleasant discharge, weakness, and loss of weight. Also I was helped in a wonderful way financially. To those who are discouraged because of what is called a slow healing I would say, Be not discouraged but persevere, and you will reap a sure reward, for Christian Science never fails; it is only we ourselves who sometimes fail in its application.
