When about sixteen years of age I became subject to attacks of asthma, which occurred more and more frequently as the years passed and were so severe that after trying various simple remedies without relief I would call in a physician to give me morphine in order that I might be able to breathe. During these years I caught cold very easily, and never ventured out in the evening without extra protection over my chest. Finally there came a time when even a hypodermic failed to give the desired relief, and physicians advised that I go to a higher altitude. It was when I was seriously thinking of following this advice that a friend advised me to try Christian Science first. And so I did.
A person afflicted with asthma seems to suffer much more at night than in the daytime. There had been many nights when I could not lie down at all, but very soon after I had help in Science, the fear of a bad night was destroyed. Perhaps I would not be free during the day, but with the help of a faithful practitioner I would be able to lie down and sleep, often not waking once the whole night through. It was proved to me absolutely that it was not a change of altitude that was necessary for my healing, but a change of thought; that when fear was destroyed, there was no lack of breath. The colds are practically a thing of the past.
There have been many other inharmonies overcome through Christian Science. One evening I grasped the handle of an iron frying pan which I had just removed from a hot oven. It seemed at first that I could not straighten out my fingers, but after asking for treatment in Christian Science I went about my work with little inconvenience. I had planned to do some cleaning which necessitated carrying buckets of water, and I used the hand constantly. The next day the only evidence of the burn was a redness of the palm and fingers. The third day there was no trace left, except a tiny blister on one finger.
