Putting on One's Armor

A student inquired of a more experienced Christian Scientist as to when is the best time to study the Lesson-Sermons, the Lessons comprising selections from the Bible and correlative passages from the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, and wisely provided for by our dear Leader. Without hesitation came the reply, "If you were going out to battle, you wouldn't leave the putting on of your armor until night; you would put your armor on the first thing in the morning!"

How easy it seems to make excuse for sleeping just a little longer, telling one's self that there will be time enough to do some studying after breakfast; and after breakfast one finds there is just time enough to catch the train. One may promise himself that he will go to the Christian Science Reading Room at noon and study there. When the noon hour comes, perhaps various things are presented which interfere; and thus the study is again prevented.

Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 118), "The warfare with one's self is grand." We are benefited by putting on our spiritual armor the first thing in the morning, for the warfare does not start when we step out into the world; it is "with one's self," and is continuous.
