About fourteen years ago a lady who had just become...
About fourteen years ago a lady who had just become interested in Christian Science recommended that I go to a practitioner for the healing of a very stubborn cough and cold. After a few visits the cough and cold disappeared. Once in a while I would go to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, but would not follow it up. About six years later, and I might say for a year, I wanted to give up so-called "social drinking," which became more frequent; and after each indulgence the remorse and melancholia became worse. At last I promised my wife that the "next time" I would consult a Christian Science practitioner, which opportunity came immediately. On this particular day I was lying in bed in a stupor, unable to get up, when our youngest child came into the room and said, "Hello, daddy." The sweetness and purity manifested by the child made me realize how far my thinking had sunk. I called a practitioner for absent treatment, so I could get up in time to catch a train for a northern winter resort where I had promised to spend three days with a brother. I did not touch a drop of liquor for the three days, and thought at one time that I should collapse. A visit was made twice a week to a practitioner, and after many trying times, including loss of all material wealth, progress was made slowly but surely. The story of Joseph and his brothers helped me to overcome a sense of injustice regarding business dealings with my own brothers. The liquor and smoking habits of many years' standing were healed, and although I come in contact with people who use both liquor and tobacco, I have not had the slightest desire for either since.
I am very grateful for the many blessings which have come to our home and also for the many healings which have come to me physically and in business; for the privilege of sending our children to the Sunday school, and of serving in a branch church.
