Ushering, a Sacred Privilege

Ushering in a Christian Science church is indeed a blessing to one chosen for this service. Answering a letter written to her in 1908 by the ushers of The Mother Church, as recorded in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 352), our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, thanked them "for ushering into our church the hearers and the doers of God's Word."

Christ Jesus said, "I am among you as he that serveth." What a sacred privilege it is to be one of those who serve as active, consecrated ushers in the great healing and saving work of Christian Science! Serving well, with the motive of love, enables one to be indeed a disciple of Christ, Truth.

These words of Mrs. Eddy are apropos, and all, including church ushers, may find their study profitable (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 116): "Never absent from your post, never off guard, never ill-humored, never unready to work for God,—is obedience; being 'faithful over a few things.'" "Never absent from your post" is indeed being faithful. This may be considered with profit in some churches as pertaining especially to the Sunday evening services. Throughout the Bible there are commendations of those who were faithful to the end of their respective tasks. The post of ushering offers an opportunity for faithful service as one is faithful to God, to man, and to our holy Cause.
