Northern Miner

A telegraphic item in the Northern Miner states what a clergyman thinks about Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, and the Christian Science organization. The remarks as published are not consistent or true to facts, but merely a misrepresentation of the subject. For the information of your readers may I state that in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is a chapter entitled "Animal Magnetism Unmasked," and that twice a year the subject of the Lesson-Sermon read in all Christian Science churches throughout the world is "Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced."

Many outstanding characters in the world's history have risen from poverty to affluence and used their riches to the service of God and for the betterment of their fellow men. Mrs. Eddy's riches were a natural outcome of her great faith and trust in God. It was not material wealth she sought, but an understanding of God, through which she recognized Him as All-in-all. God's allness necessarily excludes matter as true substance, for "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

By accepting literally the promises of the Bible Mrs. Eddy was enabled to demonstrate and practice Jesus' teaching, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," and later to give to the world a message that has come down the years with hope, healing, and salvation to all (Science and Health, p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
