Eleven years ago I began the study of Christian Science
Eleven years ago I began the study of Christian Science. I was a chronic invalid, experiencing pain and crippling deformities attendant upon a so-called incurable disease from which I had suffered throughout a period of ten years. I was ignorant of the divine Principle underlying the teachings of Christian Science, and was distinctly prejudiced against its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. In spite of the handicaps of doubt, cynicism, discouragement, and seeming lack of available means with which to have the necessary Christian Science treatment, the physical improvement gradually became apparent until the healing was complete. The means with which to meet obligations became available through steady work. I had never been able to work any considerable length of time in regular employment; but as I made my way back from California, where my study was begun, toward my home in the Mississippi Valley, I made one stop to see a friend. When this friend introduced her employer, I was asked whether I should like work in the same organization; and so without a request on my part, and with no suggestion that the offer was to be made, employment was obtained. I filled the position, working for more than two years without a day's loss of time because of illness.
My gratitude for this and for many later proofs of the power of Truth to heal and solve human problems is boundless. I can think of no experience so satisfying as the acquisition of a working knowledge of the Principle of Christian Science. The Bible, which had been lying unused on the bookshelf, is no longer puzzling and ambiguous, as it once seemed to the unenlightened sense, but is now found to be filled with helpful truths—clear, comforting, practical answers to problems as they come. Life, which once seemed difficult and complex, has been resolved into a more peaceful, orderly experience.
The opportunity to tell of the ability of Truth to heal is privilege in its truest sense. Contacts with Christian Science practitioners are among the cherished experiences of my life. I have found them generous, loving, and wise. Having experienced the benefits to be derived from many of the channels provided by The Mother Church, I am convinced that they may be had by anyone who will use this revelation of Truth to solve his problems. I feel assured that anyone earnestly seeking through a study of Christian Science a release from discord, of whatever name or nature, may find not only a cure for every ill but the far greater reward—that peace which Jesus declared must certainly characterize the life motivated by right endeavor.
