Fear of financial lack and worry over debts caused me to...

Fear of financial lack and worry over debts caused me to take up the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This study soon showed me that false pride was at the root of much of my trouble. As soon as I was willing to let go of my pride, give up my idleness, and take up some useful work, the fear and worry began to disappear. The thought expressed in Romans 13:8 helped me to pay my debts: "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law."

I soon learned that God was capable not only of supplying the needs of my two children and myself, but of healing our sicknesses as well. One of the first tests of my faith in God came when the little girl, three years of age, experienced an attack of croup. I was awakened in the night to find the child struggling for breath. I was alone, and did not know how to work for her in Science, so I asked if she would like to have me read out of the little book. She nodded her head; and in fear and trembling I brought Science and Health to the bedside and read aloud. I do not remember how long I read to her, but when I looked up she was lying down and fast asleep. There has never been another attack of the trouble.

Many other children's diseases have been destroyed very quickly. After a few hours' work, a case of whooping cough was completely healed.
