Over sixteen years ago Christian Science was brought to...
Over sixteen years ago Christian Science was brought to my attention by a dear cousin, as a means of regaining my health after I had seemingly been bound to a sense of suffering for life. Part of Mrs. Eddy's definition of "angels" as "God's thoughts passing to man" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 581) appealed to me, and my mother decided to take me to a Christian Science practitioner. I had been treated by a so-called mental healer several times and had proved to my own satisfaction that this was hypnotism, and that the effect was not lasting. Therefore, I was skeptical enough to telephone to an osteopath, whose method I had decided to try, and postpone an engagement, with the mental reservation that if Christian Science also failed I would try osteopathy next other medical measures, including surgery, having failed me already.
After my first treatment the practitioner told me that I could eat anything I wanted. I doubted this, as food had seemed a raging lion which devoured me as soon as it got inside. She then added, "And you know you must not take any medicine." This was a climax; I had tried not taking my medicine, with woeful effects. Now the decision was made to play fair and to give Christian Science as thorough a trial as I had given medicine. I wanted to be healed; there was nothing about sickness that attracted me, and I opened my doors just as wide as I could to the angels of God's presence; and He gathered me under His wings and healed me. The most beautiful thing about this practitioner's work was that it led me to God and left me with Him.
To those who want peace I can only say, Come and see—for "God is no respecter of persons;" and one healing proves the truth of Christian Science. An open mind, a willingness to be healed, and a love strong enough to obey and follow in the knowledge, or Science, of the Christ, is the simple upward way to more blessings than our worldly minds have ever dreamed of.
