At the Sepulcher

Early in the morning
A weeping woman came,
Stooped in trembling silence,
Murmuring low his name.

Ah! the tomb is empty
Save a presence twain,
Guarding at the head and feet,
Where the Lord hath lain.

One there stands beside her
In the quiet place,
Tenderest compassion
Blooming in his face.

Questioning, Why weepest?
Whom seekest thou? And she
Turns in deep amazement
Her living Lord to see.

"Mary"... "Rabboni"!
"Touch me not; for I
Am not yet ascended."
Eager feet now fly

From the tomb returning,
In joy that knows no end.
The tombs of earth are empty!
Man lives! He doth ascend!
