Christian Science came into our home while I was still...
Christian Science came into our home while I was still quite young. I was unable to go to Sunday school, as there was no branch church near; but I attended informal services which were held in a neighboring town, and all desire for any other religion than Christian Science left me. Neither did I want any other method of healing; and with the help of practitioners I had several physical helaings at this time, including that of ringworm, which disappeared within four days.
Although I acknowledged the supremacy of Christian Science, I was studying earnestly and with great interest several branches of natural science. Then the informal services ceased, so that our only links with the movement were the Christian Science Quarterly and the Sentinel. But my interest began to grow. I stated reading a portion of the Lesson-Sermon each day, and relied increasingly on my slight knowledge of the truth for help during examinations. I was able to heal a poisoned finger nail in a few days. However, for at least two years I was still unable to acknowledge the supremacy of Christian Science in the so-called scientific realm.
Then one day, while studying a zoölogy textbook, I suddenly realized the utter impossibility of material man's being the image and likeness of God. I clearly saw that God must be Spirit, and man therefore must be spiritual. From the time of this awakening, the false theories of creation, heredity, and the rest of the material beliefs which I had cherished, began to leave me, though it was some years before the healing was complete.
