Your Evening Bulletin of October 9 contained a report of a lecture, delivered in Grace Church by an out-of-town preacher, which misrepresented Christian Science; and I should like to correct any false impression it may have left in the minds of your readers.
Although the lecture was advertised as an address on Christian Science, the lecturer is not an authority on the subject, and is therefore not qualified to give an authoritative interpretation of its teachings.
His characterization of Christian Science as "the system of blasphemy" was merely an expression of personal prejudice due to ignorance of the subject; for no one who has honestly studied Christian Science, and experienced the benefits to be gained from a practical application of its teachings, would make such an erroneous assertion. Now, the word "blasphemy" is defined by the Practical Standard Dictionary in part as "evil or profane speaking of God or sacred things." But nowhere in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy,—if the text is correctly and fully quoted,—can there be found anything expressed or implied that would come within such a definition. The fact is that Christian Science does honor God supremely as the All-in-all. For example, on page 465 of the above-mentioned book, Mrs. Eddy defines God as "incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love," and she states that these are synonymous terms. Further evidence is found in the second religious tenet of Christian Science, which reads: "We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness" (ibid., p. 497; Church Manual, p. 15).
