It is nearly twenty years since I came to Christian Science seeking healing for tuberculosis, after I had tried and found wanting nearly every system known to physicians, including change of climate. From birth I had been considered a very delicate child and was the object of much tender care and solicitude from my family.

Finally our family physician told my husband that I must go to Colorado, and at once. For nearly ten months we watched every symptom for improvement as we tried one system after another, but each time I found myself only in a further weakened condition, until the day came when my little girl, five years of age, was sent back to Iowa to my mother to be cared for, and I was alone with my ten-year-old son. Our friends were very kind, but lovingly told me that I must go to a sanitarium and that they would keep the boy. I could never describe my mental suffering that night, for it seemed the end was near, and I wanted to live for my family.

I had heard much of Christian Science. A very dear friend at home had urged me several times to try it, but I had refused to listen; so now in desperation, not because I knew what I was doing, I wrote to my husband and asked his consent to have treatment. That same day he called on my friend who was a Christian Scientist and told her of the unhappy state I was in, and she urged him to write to me at once to have Christian Science treatment. He did so, and our letters crossed. When his letter came to me as I was thinking of his receiving mine, my joy knew no bounds, and I telephoned to a practitioner and asked to see her the following day. That first treatment was a joyful experience, but that night my suffering was almost beyond endurance. I now know it was due to mental chemicalization, as spoken of on page 401 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After the second treatment I was free—free to live, to enjoy, to work. We returned to our home in Illinois. Our physician, when told, said the healing would be only temporary; but one year later another son was born and he has always had perfect health.
