A few years ago I needed more than medicine, mentally,...
A few years ago I needed more than medicine, mentally, physically, and spiritually, so I turned to Christian Science after two friends had asked me to try it almost every time they had seen me for three years. I always told them not to talk to me about anything so foolish; yet I had never heard anything about Christian Science, either good or bad. Neither one of these friends was a Christian Scientist, but one of them knew a young minister who had been healed through this religion.
When I took up the study of Christian Science I was full of fear and a nervous wreck. I was so deaf that when the children were playing in the street and shouting, as children do, all I could hear was a humming sound. I was afraid to eat, or to drink iced water; I was afraid to go out; really I was afraid to live or to die. If I did go out, I had a drug in my pocketbook. I would not go alone even to the grocery store. If I wanted to walk to the corner, which is about two hundred feet from my house, I waited until all my neighbors were in bed so that they would not see me walk, as I had little control of my legs; and I always took a drug along with me even for that short distance. This condition lasted for almost four years. But through Christian Science I have learned that "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Now I trust in God, who is Life, Truth, and Love, and I go wherever it is right for me to go. I threw all my medicine away. I even traveled to another city and back by myself. Christian Science teaches us that we can "do all things through Christ which strengtheneth" us. I have taken up dressmaking, having been healed of the nervousness and fear.
I had tried to find comfort in churches, but the members used to tell me church and religion were not for nervous people. But when I took Christian Science treatment and told the practitioner, she said I could go to church, and I did. I always find ease and comfort there, and also at the lectures.
