In your issue of August 25 a lady, in writing upon the subject of religion, and particularly of new sects and creeds, mentions her preference to "the-old-time religion." In asserting this choice, which is so rightfully hers, she has, perhaps without intending to do harm, made several erroneous assertions regarding Christian Science. I request space for correction, for I am confident that you would not wish to lend your columns to an injustice to any religious denomination.

The lady very frankly admits in the article that she does not understand Christian Science; for in her reference to it, along with Rosicrucianism and Unity, she says she is "incapable of absorbing and differentiating among all these ramifications and beliefs." Certainly one who does not understand what Christian Science teaches, or is unable to grasp the fact that it is entirely different from the above-named systems, would hardly be able to judge its merits. Yet she offers the opinion that Christian Science "is not needed to help people to live or to get into heaven." She is in error when she assumes that Christian Science is a "new philosophy" and that it is different from the plain and simple teachings of Christ Jesus and of Paul. The very opposite of her assumption is true. Christian Science is indeed the selfsame, simple religion of Jesus and of the early Christians.

While the scientific, demonstrable nature of Christ's Christianity was discovered in this age by Mary Baker Eddy, this Science is not new, for it is a fact that the truth about God and His Christ must necessarily have existed always. Mrs. Eddy merely employed the term "Christian Science" to indicate the scientific, demonstrable knowledge or understanding of the Christ, Truth. It is that same understanding to which Christ Jesus referred when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Thus, Christian Science, being the religion which Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated, could not properly be considered a "new philosophy." It is real and vital and provable, and has reinstated the healing element of Christianity which was an essential part of Jesus' teachings and work, and that of his disciples and the early Christians.
