A few weeks after I became interested in Christian Science...

A few weeks after I became interested in Christian Science my daughter, aged sixteen, was taken ill with St. Vitus's dance. She completely lost control of the right side of her body, including her face, and speech was difficult for her. As I had been in the medical profession as a nurse, this was a severe test for me; but on account of the many wonderful testimonies I had heard of the cures effected by Christian Science, I decided to ask the help of a practitioner.

My daughter's employers required a weekly medical certificate, and for this purpose I was obliged to call in a doctor; but here I would point out that my daughter neither took the medicine he prescribed nor followed his instructions, which were varied. The doctor informed me it was a very severe case, and he wanted to send my daughter to a hospital. This of course I refused to allow. He then asked permission to bring a specialist to see her and I consented. The specialist, after putting my daughter through a thorough examination, said she was to be isolated and have no visitors except her sister and me, and that we were to talk as little as possible. Upon leaving he informed me that quiet was absolutely essential, and that this treatment would last from six to nine months at least.

I telephoned to a practitioner whom I had asked for help, and told her what had happened. For her loving help and the great comfort she afforded us both during this difficult time I can never be sufficiently grateful. She visited us once a week, and in four weeks my daughter was completely healed. The doctor was so amazed that he again asked permission to bring the specialist, and I was delighted to consent to this second visit. The specialist came, and once more put my daughter through a thorough examination, trying hard to find something amiss. He then shook his head, saying that he could not understand it at all, for he found no trace of the trouble, and that it was nothing short of a miracle. He then told me he had known of only one other case of the kind, one which was not nearly so severe. This case he had treated for six months, and when, at the end of that time, the patient was allowed to get up, she became much worse and had to return to bed. My daughter was not confined to bed for one entire day. She afterward returned to business, where she was obliged to undergo another medical examination. She was pronounced perfectly well and fit, the doctor remarking that she looked as if she had never had a day's illness in her life.
