From a child I was delicate, suffering from hip disease...
From a child I was delicate, suffering from hip disease and other ailments. In 1896 a spinal jacket was ordered by the doctor for a trouble called spinal curvature and caries. Soon after that I was obliged to give up work, although I managed to keep about. In May, 1914, I seemed to be so much worse that the doctor then said I must lie flat in bed and keep very still. After some months the severe pain and constant spinal sickness abated a little, so that I was able to be moved and taken to a home for "incurables."
Everyone was most kind—relatives, friends, and doctors doing all they could to make me comfortable and happy. I thought it was God's will, yet when I saw such suffering and so many helpless people all around I could not understand how it could be, since God is Love. I prayed for light and understanding; and God heard and answered, for a fellow patient asked me if I would like to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. She borrowed a copy for me, and I read it with great interest. Although there was much I could not then understand, I was comforted and filled with joy to know that God does not send sickness, but that He "forgiveth all thine iniquities, ... healeth all thy diseases, ... redeemeth thy life from destruction," and that Love is always present and all-powerful, and God is our Life. When I had been reading the book about two months my spine was healed, and I suddenly realized I could sit up. Constipation and sickness with acute indigestion have also gone.
I now know that when we have pure and right thoughts of God and man and reflect love, sin and sickness are healed. I rejoice in the truth that Jesus said makes us free; and although I am only beginning to understand just a little, I know that our Father will guide and that "progress is the law of God" (Science and Health, p. 233). I am very grateful to the loving Christian Scientists who have so faithfully and patiently helped me to realize the great love of our heavenly Father and of Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and grateful that God gave this truth to Mrs. Eddy, who took such care to make it plain to us. For the church, the Reading Room, and the Christian Science literature I am very thankful.
