South Western Tribune

In the South Western Tribune of April 5, a Cathedral Letter appears from an archdeacon, quoting excerpts from a book. As this letter has placed Christian Science in an unjust and untrue light before your readers, kindly allow me to make a correction. Christian Scientists are law-abiding citizens, who obey the law as it stands; but they also know that human laws must change as new and higher light is brought to bear upon them. Touching on compulsory vacination, so far as compulsory enforcement is concerned, in many places this law, once strictly enforced, has had to be modified because of grave doubts and divisions of opinion regarding its efficacy and safety.

The following quotation may be helpful in regard to children in Christian Science care: "A superintendent of schools, speaking recently at a convention in one of the states of America, stated that while he declared himself most emphatically in favor of medical examination of school children, the children of Christian Scientists were comparatively freer from physical defects than most children, and he advised his hearers to follow the Christian Scientists in holding the right attitude to health."

The authorized literature of Christian Science teaches us to prove all things, and hold fast that which is good; and Christian Scientists are every day proving, with signs following, the truth of this religion. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 1, Mrs. Eddy states: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love. Regardless of what another may say or think on this subject, I speak from experience. Prayer, watching, and working, combined with self-immolation, are God's gracious means for accomplishing whatever has been successfully done for the Christianization and health of mankind." Evidently the author does not believe in the power of prayer to heal, but Christian Scientists most certainly do.
