Signs of the Times

[Stewart M. Robinson, in the Artery, published by the Christian Endeavor of
the Second Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth, New Jersey]

Here is a home of Christian people who are church members. There has been much trouble. There has been a stubborn case of illness with aspects out of the ordinary. Into this home, so far as known to the writer, no Christian friend has gone with any regularity. A Christian Science practitioner, however, made a contact. . . . She took an interest in the case. She secured for the sufferer a wonderfully fine copy of the Bible with large type, one easily handled, and set her to Bible study; in conjunction, of course, with readings from Science and Health. And, third, she took a hopeful and optimistic view of the situation.

Are not those three simple things worth our remembering? When did we last fare forth to do a piece of spiritual ministry? We have set out for social engagements, yes, even for church appointments, but how about the spiritually needy? Second, have we spiritual boldness enough to actually send people to the Bible; have we smartness enough to have at hand helps for their reading thereof? Third, have we reality enough in our own Christian experience to have something to hand on, and be able honestly to take an optimistic view of trouble, because we believe the gospel is the power of God?
