Right Thinking and Health

MOST people are aware of the effect of thought upon health. They have noticed that those who are of a happy and contented disposition are usually healthier than persons who are unhappy, discontented, or perhaps evilly disposed. And they have observed, probably many times, that when the thought of the last-named class has changed from evil to good, their health has correspondingly benefited. The point is that one's thinking determines one's health, good health resulting from righteous thinking and ill health from erroneous thinking.

Christian Science lays great stress on the necessity of keeping thought right if one would enjoy good health. And in order that this may be assured, it turns thought to God. Why? Because a correct understanding of God necessitates right thinking about man, God's idea, and all that pertains to him. Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 203), "If God were understood instead of being merely believed, this understanding would establish health."

What, then, does Christian Science teach about God and man that has such an effect on health? It declares that God is perfect, and that man, God's image or reflection, is likewise perfect. Moreover, since man is perfect, he must express perfect health. Here, surely, is a wonderful truth! And there can be no denying it, since God is the perfect Being He is. The difficulty, however, with many is how to account for the inharmony which apparently besets mankind, while at the same time acknowledging God as infinite and perfect.
