In your issue of March 1 a clergyman, in his sermon...

Western Evening Herald

In your issue of March 1 a clergyman, in his sermon entitled "What do you believe about Christ?" made certain charges against Christian Science; and I shall be grateful if you will spare space for a reply.

In the first place, the Church of Christ, Scientist, can hardly be described as "ultra-modern," inasmuch as it was established "to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 17).

The reverend gentleman's reference from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," is quoted inaccurately. The passage should read thus (p. 361): "The Christian who believes in the First Commandment is a monotheist. Thus he virtually unites with the Jew's belief in one God, and recognizes that Jesus Christ is not God, as Jesus himself declared, but is the Son of God." Mrs. Eddy also states on page 25: "The spiritual essence of blood is sacrifice. . . . The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon 'the accuresed tree,' than when it was flowing in his veins as he went daily about his Father's business."
