Early in the year 1913 I began to read the Christian Science textbook...
Early in the year 1913 I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As I read the Preface and the chapter on Prayer I began to be grateful that there had been someone who was spiritual enough to write such a book. In one short hour I had learned more about God, and how to reach Him in prayer, than I had previously known through all my religious training.
Curiously enough I did not expect to be healed, although I was greatly in need of it; but as I continued to read, several physical conditions which had not yielded to medical treatment began to disappear. A few weeks later a flood swept through our city, the water rising to the second floor of our home, and I was able to use the understanding I had gained to overcome fear, discouragement, and a sense of financial loss. My health steadily improved, although we were exposed to cold and dampness and were without proper food. Up to this time I had not known any Christian Scientists or attended the church services, and the healings I had experienced were the result of reading the textbook.
Several months later I attended my first Christian Science church service. To me it was wonderful that the Bible and Science and Health were the "only preachers" (see Explanatory Note in the Christian Science Quarterly); and to hear them read without comment brought a great sense of rest and peace. Later, with the help of a practitioner, I was healed of chronic appendicitis, which physicians had said would require an operation. In February, 1919, I had a very definite proof of the power of Christian Science, especially when the declaration of truth is accompanied by sincere gratitude for our Leader.
