[Written for the Sentinel]

An Angel Song

I know the way, I cried, I know!
Up, up I ran—until
A waymark cautioned me: This is
The path of human will.

So, meekly I retraced my steps
With stumbling feet and slow;
Repeating, Show me, Lord, the way
That Thou wouldst have me go.

Once more I reached my starting point;
And, lo, there was a strain
Of heavenly music all about,
A tender, sweet refrain,

An angel song! My heart rejoiced,
Made light with Spirit's grace,
Though wondering at ministry
Of angels in this place.

We've been here all the time, they sang;
You would not heed. Instead,
You did not wait to follow us,
But quickly forged ahead;

We'll lead you o'er the rugged path
If you but watch and pray!
Then, following, I climbed the hill
With music all the way!
