It is quite evident that if the author understood Christian Science or Christian Scientists, he would never have made the statements he did regarding them in his book "Doctors and Specialists," which were quoted in a review appearing in a recent issue of the Herald-Advertiser.
Christian Science, which was discovered and founded by Mrs. Eddy over sixty years ago, should not be confused with theosophy, new-thought, psychoanalysis, or any other mental or material system of healing disease. Christian Science is not a method of medical practice. This fact has been recognized not only by the lawmakers of a great majority of the states, but also by many physicians of high standing; and numbers of them have placed themselves on record as knowing of cases where Christian Science has healed disease, organic as well as functional.
Christian Science is a religion, the religion that Christ Jesus taught and practiced on the shores of Galilee over nineteen hundred years ago. Webster defines "Christian," in part, as, "One who believes ... in Jesus Christ, and the truth as taught by Him; ... esp., one whose inward and outward life is conformed to the doctrines of Christ." Webster also gives the following definitions of the word "science": "Knowledge of principles or facts ... knowledge classified and made available in work, life, or the search for truth." Therefore, Christian Science simply means knowledge of the doctrine of Christ. It is only as one's "inward and outward life" is made to conform "to the doctrines of Christ" that he is able to follow out the divine order of the Master to heal "all manner of sickness and all manner of disease." Jesus also said: "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. ... Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."
