In the ten years before Christian Science came into my life, I was traveling a dark and dreary road, making the mistake of believing, as do so many young men, that philandering was perfectly natural and normal, and, as a result, I was reaping the pain and disillusion attached to such a belief. Will-power was tried in an effort to overcome the difficulty, but it failed completely. Then, in the endeavor to forget my physical self, I plunged into the religious activities of an orthodox church of which I was a member, but in the background always stood the specter of materiality calling to me. In despair, I turned to the adviser of this church for assistance and, after persistent questionings, I finally saw that there was no hope of enlightenment there; and then I resigned my membership. For three years thereafter, I walked through the myths of material beliefs, each day seeming to sink lower and lower, but constantly praying to the only God I knew for light and direction, for I was certain that there must be some way in which I could find Him.
One Wednesday evening a friend invited me to go to a Christian Science church. Ten days later I attended a Sunday service alone, and the subject of the Bible Lesson from the Christine Quarterly being "Christ Jesus," it interested me tremendously. When I left the church, I found myself healed of both the major belief in the necessity for sinning, and also of smoking, a habit which for twelve years I had unsuccessfully tried to stop. Both of these healings have been permanent.
Since that time, other healings have included that of the need for eyeglasses, which had been worn for ten years, the fear of certain foods, pains in my head, and trouble with my feet, such as corns and ingrowing toenails. Wonderful progress is also being demonstrated in the overcoming of a hasty temper, irritability, a strong sense of self-will, and a bombastic nature. Christian Science has been the means of bringing me out of financial lack, and has helped me to obtain the true understanding of supply. During this particular period the reading of "The Mother Church" by Joseph Armstrong, published by The Christian Science Publishing Society, brought many helpful thoughts.
